The house.

Villa Bellarive stands on Teeth of the Dog, and that is the part that matters. From the terrace the lawn runs out to the fairway and the sea sits behind it. The view is not the house's to lose — it belongs to the golf course, and nothing will ever be built on it.

Two wings of coral stone face each other across a courtyard, with a long pool down the middle and royal palms the whole way along. Seven bedroom suites. The principal one looks the same way the terrace does, out over the course to the water.

The ground floor opens. Doors fold back along the length of the main room, so the difference between being inside and being on the terrace is one step and a change of light. There is a lift between the floors, which sounds dull until somebody in the party can't manage stairs.

Where it sits

Casa de Campo is seven thousand gated acres on the south-east coast. Teeth of the Dog runs along the sea at the edge of it, seven of its holes on the water, and it is the reason a good many people come to this part of the island at all. Villa Bellarive is on the course.

Minitas beach, the marina and Altos de Chavón are a short cart ride. Nobody needs a car. Twelve minutes from La Romana airport if you are flying privately, fifty from Punta Cana if you are not.

The day

Breakfast with the course in front of you.

A round on Teeth of the Dog, or the Links if the wind is up and you would rather not lose three balls to the sea. The beach in the afternoon, or a boat out of the marina. Horses, tennis, polo, if that is the week you want.

In the evening the light comes off the water first and the fairway second, and the terrace becomes the best room in the house. Dinner is cooked here or eaten up at Altos de Chavón, twenty minutes along the river.

None of it required a decision after Tuesday.

What we do

The house has a team. So do you.

There is a household staff at Bellarive who run the house — the rooms, the meals, the laundry, the things you would rather not think about. That part is theirs.

The week is ours. Tee times, the boat, the chef and what the chef cooks, the car at the plane, the table at eight when the restaurant has said nine. We are twelve minutes from the front door, which is the whole of the difference. More on how we work with houses.
